Busting myths on Hot Stone Massage

Since training to do Hot Stone Massage back in April I have come to realise that images like this have a lot to answer for. There is a common perception that Hot Stone Massage involves the practitioner placing stones on the clients back and

However in reality a Hot Stone Massage is very similar to a Holistic Massage. On your first appointment I will do an in depth consultation to get a full case history and get an idea of how you are and what you want to get out of the massage. We will then create a treatment plan together.

Hot Stone Massage can be used on any part of the body but is particularly good for stiff back and shoulders and tight leg muscles and glutes.

I will apply oil to your skin and then instead of using my hands, fingers, fists, forearms and elbows to create the strokes and apply pressure to the muscles I will use pre-heated natural Basalt Stones. I hold the stones in my hand and use them to create the massage strokes.

The advantage of using hot stones is that it can add extra depth to the massage and the heat from the stones works really well to help the muscles relax. It is well known that heat is helpful in treating muscle pain. It is quite common to use a hot wheat bag or a hot water bottle on a stiff neck or bad back and Hot Stone Massage is like combining the comfort of a hot water bottle with a nourishing massage.

When the weather gets colder we often tense our muscles in an attempt to keep ourselves warm. Cold weather is also triggering for lots of conditions such as arthritis. So if you find yourself in pain this winter or find that the cold weather brings on aches and pains then consider booking in for a Hot Stone Massage.
